NITESHIFT: Labyrinth — Part 1
And then it happened: The beautiful, terrifying storm clouds above finally answered her question.
In an instant, the earth-shatteringly violent strike tore through her body, supercharging each cell with enough energy to animate a hundred exact copies of her for a thousand years. Overlapping visions of past, present, and future saturated her senses with a blistering, white-hot intensity.
Her optic nerve screamed WHITELIGHTWHITELIGHTWHITELIGHT as it was addressed directly for the first and last time.
The army of cilia in her inner ear was pressed flat all at once, transmitting a ringing sensory report with a deeply uncertain guess: Massive explosion… possibly underwater?
Above all, an indescribable physical feeling dominated her semi-conscious state, like an impossibly dense layer of goosebumps hovering one foot away from her skin in every direction.

She blinked.
Before her very eyes, the field of possibility narrowed.
She blinked again, and began folding back into herself.
The white hot light of infinity congealed into a mere milky haze, then drained away. The last echoes of thunder finished their decay, swallowed by the rumble of trucks barreling down the ill-maintained freeway nearby.
She blinked once more.
Her eyes reopened and she found herself, like countless times before, back inside the labyrinth.
